The National Endowment for the Arts recently announced that Chops’ Pan Outreach program will receive a $25,000 grant. This funding from the prestigious NEA program will support steel-drum residencies at K-12 public schools in 2025.
"In a challenging fundraising environment, with many of our host schools facing the Covid 'financial cliff', stable funding sources like the NEA enable Chops to bring high-quality music enrichment to schools that are facing programmatic and staffing cuts," said Chops’ executive director Megan O’Leary. "Programs like Pan Outreach lift up urban-core students and their teachers. We're grateful to the NEA, and to all of Chops' supporters, for helping us bring music enrichment to classrooms that need it most."
Pan Outreach, an artist-in-residence program founded at Chops in 2018, partners with host schools to bring steel-pan instruction to schools for 6 - 8 week residencies throughout the academic year. The program is free for low-income public schools.
"The staff and I are so incredibly grateful that Pan Outreach has been recognized as worthy of NEA funding for a third consecutive year,” said Pan Outreach Director Jeremy Kunkel. “To have a nationally recognized entity like the National Endowment for the Arts recognize the value of the programming we offer is an amazing affirmation of our mission at Chops and the tireless work so many have contributed to see it through. Just awesome!"
Quote from National Endowment for the Arts Chair “The NEA is proud to continue our nearly 60 years of supporting the efforts of organizations and artists that help to shape our country’s vibrant arts sector and communities of all types across our nation,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “It is inspiring to see the wide range of creative projects taking place, including Chops, Inc.'s Pan Outreach Program."
